Water filtration is a hot topic these days, especially considering how many unnecessary elements are in tap water. Did you know you can look up what elements are currently found in your county’s tap water, and at what levels those elements are found? Simply search for your county name and water quality online and you can find the report. With a multitude of junk getting into our tap water, I believe water filtration is extremely important.
At my house, we have the Big Berkey Filtration System and we love it! It’s easy to use, and doesn’t take up too much counter space, which is important for me because I spend a ton of my time in the kitchen and I need my space.
The only slight frustration we had was the initial setup, as you have to properly prime the filters and we had some difficulty figuring out the best way to do it. The company recommends using your sink to do it, but our sink didn’t have the required amount of pressure to get it done correctly. After a bit of struggling, getting annoyed, and trying different things, we ended up using a water bottle to get the desired pressure into the filters. Once we had a good method for priming, it was smooth sailing and now we have zero issues when priming new filters.
There is a ton of information on the Berkey Water Filters website including the below (pulled from the Berkey website), and even more information on what the filter can remove from water.
The black berkey elements that come standard in this system purifiy both treated water and untreated raw water from such sources as remote lakes, streams, stagnant ponds and water supplies in foreign countries, where regulations may be substandard at best. This Berkey Water Filter is our most popular system and is perfect for everyday home kitchen use, outdoor activities, and a must in hostile environments where electricity, water pressure, or treated water may not be available.
This system removes pathogenic bacteria, viruses, cysts and parasites entirely and extracts harmful chemicals such as herbicides, pesticides, VOCs, organic solvents, radon 222 and trihalomethanes. It also reduces nitrates, nitrites and heavy metals such as lead and mercury. This system is so powerful it can remove food coloring from water without removing the beneficial minerals your body needs. Virtually no other system can duplicate this performance.
Along with the black filter elements described above, we also use the Fluoride/Arsenic Filters in our unit at home. Arsenic? In our tap water? Yes, there’s arsenic in our tap water. While I do realize the levels are low, why ingest it when I can purchase a filtration system that will remove it? I’ve also had some people ask me why I use filters to remove the fluoride from the our water, when fluoride is good for the teeth. Everyone in my family has healthy teeth. We don’t require additional fluoride, so again, why ingest something we don’t need?
Overall, I think for the price, I really like this filtration system. At some point I would love to be able to purchase a large full home filtration system, but those are extremely expensive and I haven’t done my full research on them. So for now, the Big Berkey is fantastic! It also travels fairly well and is easy to take along on camping trips, which is another bonus for my family.
Keep in mind, I would not place links to purchase this system if I did not own one myself. I do own one, and I think it’s fantastic!
