Hand sanitizer is one of those things… I see some people use it like it’s going out of style, and some people never use it at all. I definitely do not use it to the extreme, but I certainly use it in many situations. I always carry a small bottle with me to use at the grocery store or in other public areas on an as-needed basis.
We have a bottle right inside our front door that everyone must use upon entering our home. My son uses it upon his return from school, after which he promptly goes to the bathroom to wash his face. This may seem extreme to some, but he’s 7, which means he’s running around all day getting dirty and hanging out with other snot/dirt-covered children (himself included of course) for about 8 hours a day. I do not need him catching the flu or carrying it into our house. I have had guests look at me funny when I require they utilize our hand sanitizer upon entering our home, but it is our home and I do require it. This is only out of concern for the health of my family and it is well within my right (and I consider it my responsibility) to ensure that we are taking care of ourselves.
According to the CDC website, “many studies have found that sanitizers with an alcohol concentration between 60–95% are more effective at killing germs than those with a lower alcohol concentration or non-alcohol-based hand sanitizers,” so when choosing a hand sanitizer, ensure the alcohol concentration is at least 60% or higher.
Purell Advanced is my hand sanitizer of choice, as it contains 70% ethyl alcohol, which exceeds the FDA Healthcare Personnel Handwash (HCPHW) efficacy requirement.
