Repurposing everyday household items is a big part of being prepared for anything. Not only does repurposing open up creativity, it can also help save money which is important to overall preparedness.
I recently read about crocheting plastic bags together to create all sorts of different items. My first attempt at doing this went pretty well and saved about 10 plastic grocery bags from entering our landfills. If you already know how to crochet, this is an easy project to undertake, though be prepared to spend quite a bit of time on it, as the prep work is time consuming.
Step 1: Gather plastic bags you’d like to use. Your creation can be one solid color, multicolored, striped, etc.
Step 2: Wash all plastic bags and allow them to dry completely.
Step 3: Cut the bags into strips. I found the easiest way to do this was to fold the bag and cut off the bottom portion where it all connects. I then cut in strips around in circles, up to the top of the bag, making one large strip out of each bag.
Step 4: Crochet your creation. Don’t know how to crochet? Check out this wikiHow instructional to learn. As you go, you will need to tie the bags together. To ensure the knots held, I tucked the ends of the knots into my purse at the end instead of cutting them off close to the knot.
Step 5: Add any final details- I added velcro to each side of the clutch purse to hold it shut. I have also seen people add straps or other decorations.
Step 6: Enjoy what you have created!
Repurposing items you already own is a fantastic way to create gifts for friends and family absolutely free. I love to repurpose because I prefer to spend money on things I absolutely must buy, not things I don’t really need. If I want something and there’s an option to spend time and make it for free, that’s what I’m going to do.
