Walking is something that is often overlooked when considering preparing for the worst. Being able to walk long distances without becoming fatigued is important when it comes to all the different things a person may need to be able to accomplish when SHTF. Right now, many of us sit behind a desk for at least eight hours a day, possibly more. Follow this up with our time spent sitting at the dinner table, sitting in front of the television, and then maybe sitting in front of a computer (again), and we are sitting for almost all the hours of the day! That is a lot of sitting and it is most certainly not healthy.
There are many benefits of walking, and it is a very easy exercise to add to our daily routines. The American Heart Association lists the following benefits of walking:
Research has shown that the benefits of walking and moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day can help you:
• Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
• Improve blood pressure and blood sugar levels
• Improve blood lipid profile
• Maintain body weight and lower the risk of obesity
• Enhance mental well being
• Reduce the risk of osteoporosis
• Reduce the risk of breast and colon cancer
• Reduce the risk of non-insulin dependent (type 2) diabetes
The benefits above that come from just 30 minutes of walking per day are incredible! Especially considering it would be best for all of us to be as healthy as possible should a SHTF scenario take place any time in the near future.
Walking is an activity that can easily be done with pets and children as well. It is important to make sure both children and dogs are able to walk fair distances on a variety of terrains just to ensure they have experience in it. Bugging out on foot is not the scenario I have in mind when considering having family/pet practice walking on and experiencing difficult terrains. I am considering possibly needing someone to head over to the creek and get water to boil for dinner- something that could require traveling on even ground and on rocks to get to the creek, followed by doing it again while carrying a full bucket or container.
Maintaining good health now is extremely important. Not only will it give you peace of mind knowing you are physically able to do things, but exercising has been shown to also improve one’s mental state. Being of sound mind is important in any stressful situation, as having your head about you will help you be better able to make good decisions when required.
